A wedge gate valve is a commonly used type of shut-off valve designed to completely stop or allow the flow of liquids in pipelines. It is named after the wedge-shaped gate element that moves vertically within the valve body to block or open the flow path.

Wedge gate valves are widely applied in potable water systems, wastewater installations, industrial pipelines, and thermal networks. They can be installed both vertically and horizontally, making them a universal solution in many industries.

The working principle of a wedge gate valve involves the vertical movement of a wedge (usually made of metal or rubber-coated iron), which slides between guides inside the valve body. When closed, the wedge presses tightly against sealing surfaces, effectively stopping the flow. When opened, it retracts to allow unobstructed flow.

Gate valves can be operated manually (handwheel), or automatically using electric or pneumatic actuators. Modern designs often include stainless steel stems and EPDM/NBR seals for increased durability and corrosion resistance.

Wedge gate valves are valued for their robust performance and versatility. Key benefits include:

  • Full bore flow – when open, the valve offers minimal pressure loss;

  • High tightness – precision-machined sealing surfaces ensure leak-free operation;

  • Corrosion resistance – advanced coatings (e.g., epoxy) and materials increase durability;

  • Reliable in harsh conditions – suitable for high-pressure and chemically aggressive media;

  • Easy maintenance – simple access to internal parts enables fast servicing.

Wedge gate valves are used in:

  • Water supply and wastewater systems

  • Industrial and process installations

  • Power plants and district heating systems

  • Fire protection systems

  • Food, chemical, and pulp & paper industries

Wedge gate valves are a reliable, long-lasting, and efficient solution for fluid flow control in demanding applications. With their simple yet effective design, they ensure safe and maintenance-friendly operation across a wide range of sectors.
